Four of seven seats on the Akron Public Schools Board of Education in Ohio were up for at-large general election on November 7, 2017. Three incumbents filed for re-election. Incumbents Bruce D. Alexander, Lisa Mansfield, and Patrick Bravo and former board member Ginger Baylor defeated newcomers N.J. Akbar and Helena Larios for the four at-large seats.[1][2]

The Akron Public Schools Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Board member terms began on the first day of January following the election.[3] All members represent the district at-large. Four four-year terms were up for election on November 7, 2017.

Candidates had to be 18 years or older as of November 7, 2017, residents of the district for which they ran, and registered voters in that district.[3] Candidates had to file for this election with the Summit County Board of Elections by August 9, 2017.

There were two campaign finance deadlines for Ohio school board candidates in 2017:[7]

  • The Pre-General was due on October 26, 2017.
  • The Post-General was due on December 15, 2017.

All school board candidates whose names appear on the ballot are required to file pre- and post-election reports. A pre-election report is due 12 days before the election if candidates spend or receive $1,000 or more in monetary or in-kind contributions between the time they last filed a report and 20 days before the election. Post-election reports must be filed within 38 days after the election. School board candidates are required to file a semiannual report by the last business day in July if they do not file a post-primary report and they receive $10,000 or more during the semiannual reporting period.[8]

Akron Public Schools is located in northeastern Ohio in Summit County. The county seat is Akron. The county was home to an estimated 540,300 residents from 2010 to 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[9] The district was the fifth-largest school district in the state in the 2014-2015 school year and served 21,532 students.[10]

Demographics

Summit County overperformed in comparison to the rest of Ohio in terms of higher education achievement from 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 30.3 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.1 percent of state residents. The median household income in Summit County was $50,765, while it was $49,429 for Ohio. The county poverty rate was 14.4 percent, compared to the state's 14.6 percent.[9]
