- When Al Gore declared his candidacy for the 2000 election, he pointed to policies implemented during the Clinton-Gore administration when he was vice president and stated that the nation's surplus at the time was due to those efforts. He followed up with, "I will balance the budget or better, every year." He added, "I will search out every last dime of waste and bureaucratic excess. I know how to do that."[1]
- In 1993, Gore cast the deciding vote, because of a split Senate, to approve the Clinton administration's budget. The budget involved tax increases on America's wealthy and spending cuts amounting to $253 billion over four years.[2][3]
