Al Schmidt (Republican Party) is the Pennsylvania Secretary of State. He assumed office on June 29, 2023. His current term ends on January 19, 2027.
Schmidt (Republican Party) ran for re-election to the Philadelphia City Commission in Pennsylvania. He won in the general election on November 5, 2019.
Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) appointed Schmidt acting Pennsylvania Secretary of State on January 17, 2023, to replace Leigh Chapman (D). [1] Schmidt's appointment was confirmed by the Pennsylvania State Senate on June 29, 2023. [2]
Biography
Al Schmidt was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and lives in Pennsylvania. Schmidt earned a bachelor's degree in history from Allegheny College and a doctorate in history from Brandeis University. His career experience includes serving as president and CEO of the nonprofit Committee of Seventy.[1] Schmidt also served as a Philadelphia city commissioner from 2012 to 2022.[1]
