Al Stewart is the former acting secretary of labor in the Biden administration. He assumed office on January 20, 2021.[1] He departed office after the Senate confirmed Marty Walsh as secretary of labor on March 22, 2021.

Biography

Stewart received a B.A. in history from Virginia State University and an M.A. in history and public administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He also earned his J.D. from North Carolina Central University.[2]

He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army from 1977 to 1989. From 1986 to 1991, he worked as a management analyst and special assistant to the director at the D.C. Department of Public Works.[2]

Stewart began working at the Department of Labor in 1996. He held several roles at the agency over the following two decades, including as a director of the Office of Procurement and Grant Policy, Strategic and Performance Planning, and Office of Administrative Services. He also served as the procurement executive and the deputy assistant secretary for administration and management.[2]
