Alabama Freedom of Religion, Amendment 8 (1998)

The Alabama Freedom of Religion Amendment, also known as Amendment 8, was on the November 3, 1998, election ballot in Alabama as a legislatively referred constitutional amendment. It was approved. This measure stated that the government must prove a compelling interest prior to limiting the free exercise of religion. It also stipulated that any limitations placed on the free exercise of religion must represent the least restrictive means of achieving the stated objective. [1]
