On February 17, 2010, House Bill 588 was introduced to the Alabama House of Representatives by Rep. Ron Johnson. The bill passed the Alabama House of Representatives on April 13, 2010, and the Alabama State Senate on April 22, 2010. The bill was ultimately defeated by pocket veto.
The bill would allow the commissioner of the Alabama Funeral and Cemetery Preneed Consumer Protection Fund to inspect the records of any person or business that sells preneed funeral contracts. Information obtained in these investigations would not become public record, presumably to protect trade secrets.[1]
