Alabama: The state's The Birmingham News newspaper has analyzed and reported on the financial disclosures of candidates for Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice. All three candidates filed their first quarter financial disclosure forms, providing insight to the organizations and individuals backing their campaigns.

Current Chief Justice Charles Malone had the most cash available at the end of 2011 and his donors are a wide variety of business groups and PACS. Malone also received the endorsement of one of the largest donors to Republican judicial candidates in the state, the Alabama Civil Justice Reform Committee PAC.[1]

Challenger Charles Graddick has led in total month-to-month fundraising so far. The majority of donations come from the region around Mobile, where Graddick is the presiding judge of the Circuit 13 Court.[1]

Roy Moore, the former Chief Justice who explored a run for the presidency, has brought in the lowest amount of funds since declaring his candidacy two months ago. The biggest donor to his campaign is former Constitution Party presidential candidate Michael Peroutka, who Moore calls a friend.[1] According to the Montgomery Advertiser, Peroutka is also affiliated with groups referred to as "neo-Confederate," "secessionist" and "racist".[2]
