Alabama: John Aaron has been engaged in a four year long battle with the Alabama State justice Department in an attempt to obtain records relating to the recusal of an U.S. attorney involved in the case that found former Governor Don Siegelman guilty on corruption charges. U.S. attorney Leura Garrett Canary choose to recuse herself from the politically charged case in 2002. She was appointed by former President George W. Bush and is married to Bill Canary, who has worked as a Republican consultant. Sieglman was a Democrat charged with corruption charges and found guilty, along with HealthSouth Chief Executive Richard Scrushy. Aaron, a former campaign researcher for Sieglman and lawyer, says that the Justice Department is withholding 259 pages worth of documents pertaining to the recusal; documents, which Aaron says, may show that Canary remained in touch with members of the prosecution. Aaron filed suit in a District of Columbia federal court against the Justice Department in 2009. Sieglman is currently appealing his conviction to the Supreme Court of the United States.[1]
