Two seats on the Alameda Unified School District Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014.[1][2] Incumbent Mike McMahon was defeated by challengers Gary Lym and Solana Henneberry.[3]

Alameda Unified School District is located in Alameda County, California.

Alameda Unified School District is located in Alameda County, California. The county seat of Alameda County is Oakland.[4] Alameda County was home to 1,578,891 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[5] During the 2011-2012 school year, Alameda Unified School District was the 150th-largest school district by enrollment in California and served 10,669 students.[6]

Demographics

Alameda County outperformed the rest of California in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 41.1 percent of Alameda County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 30.5 percent for California as a whole. The median household income for Alameda County was $71,516 compared to $61,400 for the entire state. The poverty rate in Alameda County was 12 percent compared to 15.3 percent statewide.[5]

Method of school board member selection

The Alameda Unified School District Board of Education consists of five members elected to four-year terms in at-large elections. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Two seats were up for election in 2014, and three seats will be up for election in 2016.[1][2]

In order to get on the ballot, candidates had to file nomination documents and declarations of candidacy with the Alameda County Registrar of Voters during the nomination period, which began July 14, 2014, and ended August 8, 2014.[8]

Voters had to register by October 20, 2014, in order to vote in the election. Those who were already registered could participate in early voting, which began October 6, 2014.[1]

Campaign finance

Candidates had to file contribution reports within 24 hours of receiving an aggregate total of $1,000 or more from a single source. The first scheduled pre-election report filing deadline was October 6, 2014. If candidates raised or spent less than $1,000 during the 2013 and 2014 calendar years, they had to file Form 470 at that time. If candidates raised or spent more during that time, they had to file Form 460 by the pre-election report filing deadline.[16]

Candidates required to file Form 460 also had to file a second pre-election report on October 23, 2014, and they had to file termination reports by December 31, 2014. If a termination report was not filed, candidates had to file a semi-annual report by February 2, 2015.[16]

Reports

Candidates received a total of $18,884.21 in contributions and spent a total of $13,388.74 in expenditures, according to the most recent campaign disclosure reports published by the Alameda County Registrar of Voters as of October 28, 2014.[17][18] Incumbent Mike McMahon filed Form 470, indicating he did not intend to raise or spend more than $1,000 for his 2014 campaign. Because of this, McMahon did not have to file any additional campaign finance reports.[19]

Superintendent leaves

Superintendent Kirsten Vital said farewell to the Alameda Unified School District in July 2014 to move on to her new position as superintendent of the Capistrano Unified School District. Vital served as superintendent at Alameda Unified for over five years.[20] The district hired Sean McPhetridge, a former assistant superintendent for Alameda Unified, for a one-year term as interim superintendent. He started on August 13, 2014, and his contract lasted until June 2015.[21]

This election shared the ballot with other school board elections, municipal elections and general elections for three seats in the U.S. House, a number of state executive offices, one state Senate seat and several state Assembly seats. Voters in the district also were asked to vote on Measure I, a ballot measure seeking to issue $179,500,000 in bonds to improve earthquake safety and student security and upgrade systems and infrastructure in the Alameda Unified School District.[1][22]
