Alan Neil Bloch was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. He joined the court on November 2, 1979, after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Bloch assumed senior status on April 12, 1997. His service ended on October 6, 2024, upon his death.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Bloch graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with his bachelor's degree in 1953 and from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law with his J.D. in 1958.[1]

Military service

Bloch served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955, in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard from 1955 to 1959, and in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1959 to 1963.[1]

Judicial career

Western District of Pennsylvania

Bloch was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on August 3, 1979, to a seat vacated by Herbert Sorg. Bloch was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 31, 1979, and he received his commission on November 2, 1979. Bloch elected to take senior status beginning on April 12, 1997. He was succeeded in this position by Judge Joy Conti.[1]
