As of 2016, Alan Eustace was a retired senior vice president of Google. He was a donor to California ballot measures related to abolishing the death penalty, including California Proposition 62, Repeal of the Death Penalty in 2016.
Career
Eustace, originally from the suburbs of Orlando, Florida, worked his way through college at the University of Central Florida by working at Disney World during the summers. He eventually received his Ph.D. from UCF in computer science. Eustace began his career in computer engineering with a small startup and then with Compaq, a company later purchased by Hewlett-Packard.[1] Eustace joined Google in 2002 after leaving Hewlett-Packard. He was the senior vice president of engineering at the time before eventually moving to become the senior vice president of knowledge, overseeing search operations. Eustace retired from the company in 2015.[2]
In 2014, Eustace achieved the world record for skydiving from the highest altitude. Above Roswell, New Mexico, Eustace went more than 25 miles up into the air stopping near the top of the stratosphere. According to The New York Times, "Eustace cut himself loose from the balloon with the aid of a small explosive device and plummeted toward the earth at speeds that peaked at 822 miles per hour, setting of a small sonic boom heard by people on the ground." Eustace told the paper, "It was amazing. It was beautiful. You could see the darkness of space and you could see the layers of atmosphere, which I had never seen before."[3]
