Alan E. Highers was a judge on the Tennessee Court of Appeals. He was appointed to the court by Governor Lamar Alexander (R) and assumed office on September 1, 1982. Highers was then retained to the court in August 1984 and retained again in August 1990, 1998, and 2006.[1] He retired from the bench at the end of his last term on August 31, 2014.[2][3]

Education

Highers received both his A.A. and LL.D. from Freed-Hardeman University, his B.A. from David Lipscomb University, and his J.D. from the University of Memphis School of Law.[1]

Career

Highers began practicing as a lawyer in 1968. He worked in this capacity until 1973, when he became a special judge and referee at the Juvenile Court of Memphis for Shelby County. From 1977 until his appointment to the Tennessee Court of Appeals in September 1982, Highers served as a judge for the 30th Judicial District Court in Memphis. He has also lectured at the University of Memphis School of Law (1972) and was involved with the Tennessee Judicial Conference and the National College of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.[1]
