Alan Mulally is on the board of directors for Google and Alphabet Inc, Google's parent company, as well as on the company's auditing committee.[2] From 2006 to 2014, he was the CEO of Ford Motor Company. During the period of transition between the Obama and Trump administrations, Mulally was reported to be in consideration for a high-level appointment in the Trump administration. Politico reported that Mulally was being considered for secretary of state.[3]

Career

Boeing Company

With a degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering, Alan Mulally joined Boeing in 1969. He worked on Boeing's 727, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777 and 787 airplanes. Eventually, Mullay served as the vice president of engineering as well as vice president and general manager of the company's 777 division.[1]

By 1994, Mulally had become senior vice president of airplane development for the Boeing Commercial Airplanes Group, which oversees the company's commercial airliner manufacturing.[1][4] Mulally oversaw the group's development progress, flight test operations, and certification; he also acted as the government technical liaison.[1]

After serving as president of Boeing Information, Space and Defense Systems, and also serving as senior vice president of the Boeing Company for only a year, Mulally was promoted to president of the Commercial Airplanes division. By 2001, he had taken on the role of CEO of the Commercial Airplanes division.[1][5]

Ford Motor Company

In 2006, Mulally joined Ford Motor Company as the company's CEO and president; he also served on the board of directors. During the 2008 financial crisis, under Mulally's leadership, Ford was one of the few automotive manufactuers that did not receive the governemnt's full bailout offer and only took a $5.9 billion loan. At the time, Mulally stated "[I] Absolutely don’t think it’s a bailout. We haven’t decided the exact nature of it, but we think it’s going to be a loan at lower interest rates with the commitment to pay it back."[6] Mulally left Ford in 2014.[1]

Boards, committees, and councils

Currently, Mulally serves on the board of Alphabet, Google's parent company. He also serves on the audit committee for the company.[2][7]

In 2010, Mulally was appointed to the President’s Export Council. The council advised President Barack Obama "on export enhancement and ways to encourage companies to increase exports and enter new markets."[1] He has previously served as the co-chair of the Washington Competitiveness Council. He served on the boards of NASA, the University of Washington, the University of Kansas, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the U.S. Air Force Scientific Advisory Board.[1]
