Candidate Connection

Alana Watkins participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 16, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Alana Watkins's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Prohibiting the collection of Grocery Taxes
Raising Minimum Wage
Expanding Healthcare[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am personally passionate About expanding healthcare because my son is a juvenile diabetic who will be turning 18 this year. He and others like him need health insurance to survive daily. The low minimum wage and rising healthcare cost creates problems for thousands of Georgians.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Alana Watkins answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I would like to follow the example of the late Zell Miller. Former Governor Miller was a champion for the working Georgian. He made sure that a Father could send their children to college regardless of how much money he made.[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
It is important for every political leader to have a good moral compass packed with empathy and compassion for people.[4]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I possess leadership qualities and a Christian upbringing. These characteristics require me to fight for the rights of All People.[4]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To protect the rights of the common man.[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to leave a legacy of legislation that will protect the Constitutional Rights of all Americans.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
When Sally Ride became the 1st woman in space. I was 7 years old.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
My first job was a paper route. I went on to become a Sr. District Sales manger of Circulation and stayed with the company for 17 years.[4]
What happened on your most awkward date?
I was 15 years old and fell off the steps of my front porch when I was kissed for the 1st time.[4]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas because I love giving presents and cooking for my whole family.[4]
What is your favorite book? Why?
It use to be “To Kill a Mockingbird” until I read Harper Lee’s “Go Set a Watchman”. As a youth, I always admired the courage of Atticus Finch to fight for justice, especially when the person didn’t have the means to fight for himself. But, in “Go Set a Watchman” it goes further, reminding me of the Bible in the book of Isaiah, chapter 21. That chapter tells us to “Go Set a Watchman” to announce the fall of Babylon. That book reminds me to be a Watchman for the people.[4]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Wonder Woman because she posses the Golden Lasso of Truth and she fights for America![4]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
Anything that plays music, because music relaxes me and makes me happy.[4]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Look what you made me do, by Taylor Swift[4]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Being a parent. It’s the hardest thing to create good citizens.[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No[4]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Healthcare[4]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
The governor has to be a leader for the legislature. It is important for the legislature to have an initiative but it is also equally important for the governor to have an initiative. They both have to work together to achieve these goals.[4]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes, the legislature is a collective and collaborative environment. It is important to build relationships with each if anything is going to get done.[4]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
A bi-partisan committee[4]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Transportation or Public Safety and Homeland Security[4]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
No, I am too middle of the road for that.[4]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
Zell Miller[4]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
I’m not sure[4]
