Appointments
The director is appointed by the Alaska Commissioner of Natural Resources "from a list of two or more candidates submitted by the board [of agriculture and conservation]."[2]

(b) The director of agriculture shall be appointed to the partially exempt service by the commissioner from a list of two or more candidates submitted by the board. The commissioner may reject all candidates, in which case the board shall submit a new list. The director may be removed by the commissioner at any time, and the office shall remain vacant until a new director is appointed under this subsection. |

Duties
The director of agriculture, as head of the Division of Agriculture, is responsible for "[promoting] and [encouraging] development of an agriculture industry" in Alaska. He or she also serves as director of the Board of Agriculture and Conservation, which establishes the Division's policies.
The director's staff administers a variety of programs to encourage farming, including:[3][4]
- Low interest loans to Alaskan farmers under the Alaska Agricultural Loan Act
- Coordination with the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation to provide farmers with insurance.
- Aid for state agricultural and industrial fairs
- The "Farm to School" program, which educates youth about the food system.
- Enforcement of various food-related regulations
- Marketing services for Alaska farmers, including the "Alaska Grown" campaign to promote awareness of food grown in the state
- The Plant Materials Center, which produces and distributes "materials to meet environmental requirements and promote commercial development of native [Alaskan plant] species."[5]
- Other grants to promote innovation, specialty crop development and youth education.
