ANCHORAGE, Alaska: Judge Frank Pfiffner's ruling last Friday declared same-sex domestic partners are "similarly situated" in comparison to married couples and that they are due equal protection under the state constitution. More specifically meaning equal exemptions on local property taxes for Alaska's same sex couples.[1][2]

The ACLU of Alaska and the national American Civil Liberties Union represented the three same-sex Alaskan couples in their attempt to gain equal tax benefits.[1][2]

A 1998 state constitutional amendment to the Alaska Constitution states that "To be valid or recognized in this State, a marriage may exist only between one man and one woman."[1][3]
