Albert Mitchell

Albert Mitchell is the judge of the Tenth Judicial District Court in New Mexico.[1] He was elected to the seat in 2008, defeating incumbent Donald Schutte.[2] He was not retained in the 2014 election.[3]
He and Donald Schutte applied to fill the vacancy following the 2014 election, and Governor Susana Martinez appointed Mitchell back to his position on the court in January 2015. The New Mexico Supreme Court rejected a petition to block his appointment.[4][5] Mitchell was elected in 2016.
Education
Mitchell received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his J.D. from the University of New Mexico in 1984.[6]

2016
New Mexico held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election took place on June 7, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 8, 2016.[7] Incumbent Albert Mitchell ran unopposed in the New Mexico 10th District Court general election for Division 1.[8]

Mitchell was not retained to the 10th District Court after receiving 49.97 percent of the vote on November 4, 2014.

Selection method

The 84 judges of the New Mexico District Courts are selected in partisan elections to six-year terms. They must compete in yes-no retention elections if they wish to serve subsequent terms.[9]
The process of chief judge selection varies by district, as does the chief judge's term length.[9]
Qualifications
To serve on this court, a judge must:[9]
- be the minimum age of 35;
- have at least six years legal practice;
- be a state resident for at least three years; and
- be a district resident.
