I am a resident of Elizabeth in Elbert County. I am retired and a mother and grandmother. Prior to retirement I was employed as for many years as a nurse and later as an attorney. I have lived a semi rural lifestyle and am familiar with the issues that effect citizens in the rural parts of Colorado. I am interested in serving as a voice for the citizens of the counties that make up House District 56 in the State Legislature. While I believe that individuals should have the freedom to live and control their own lives, there are areas in which government can and must help. I hope to hear from the citizens of the large diverse district that is Hd 56 and learn their concerns. I believe in the rule of law and equality before the law. I believe in the principles embodied in the Constitution. I believe in the dignity of work. All living beings have value and should be treated with respect.
  • Good health is essential if humans are to accomplish all that needs to be done to have a good, productive life.Access to quality, affordable healthcare is needed to maintain good health. Providing healthcare to rural communities is a problem being faced by many of the states in the rural West, including Colorado. The hospitals in the eastern plains of Colorado are barely able to remain solvent. The state must work with the federal government to assure that these facilities are funded and staffed so that they may continue to provide the services needed to our citizens. As a nurse and attorney, I am familiar with healthcare systems and it will be my priority to work with experts in the field to assure that our healthcare needs are protected.
  • Communication is essential for a society to function. Today the internet has become a major method of communication. We conduct business on the internet. Telemedicine is conducted on the internet eliminating the need to travel for hours to see a doctor. The internet has become a means of educating children and adults. However, there are portions of the state that have no or poor internet connectivity. That is especially so in rural areas such as the eastern plains of Colorado. The federal government has allotted billions of dollars for the purpose of improving internet connectivity in underserved areas. I will work to assure that Colorado obtains their share of those funds and distribute them to the areas in which they are needed.
  • I support a strong public education system. Just as good health is needed to carry on the activities of daily living, a good education is needed to earn a living and support one’s family. Education takes many forms. There are many different workers needed in a functioning society. That is why supporting post secondary education is important to me. High school graduates need access to affordable education. Often young people do not know what occupation suits them. That is why junior college, trade and technical courses should be available to them. A university education is expensive and not suitable for all students. We must support an affordable, accessible, innovative system of post secondary education.
As an attorney, I am passionate about protecting our Democracy and living according to the ideals set forth in the Constitution of the United States. I believe in the rule of law. The law should be applied equally to all our residents. America is the land of opportunity and I have lived the American dream. I want to promote that sentiment to other Americans. In America, with honest hard work anything is possible.
There are many people I look up to for different reasons. We are fallible human beings, so there is not one person who is perfect in all aspects of their lives. I try to look for the good in people.
I am an avid reader(listener on Audible these days since I do not have time to sit and read). I prefer nonfiction reads, especially memoirs and biographies. The biography of “Grant” stands out because he was a man who overcame his demons and accomplished many things.
A movie that I would recommend is “Gettysburg “. It exemplifies the character of Joshua Chamberlain who lead his troops to victory and was a kind, enlightened person. It also depicts the struggles of the Confederate and Union soldiers in command, who were now fighting their friends with whom they had attended West Point. The characterization of General Lee shows an honorable man, loyal to his cause, albeit misguided.
Integrity is important for an elected official. Difficult decisions need to be made. There will never be total agreement on important issues. Elected officials need to consider all the pros and cons of an issue before arriving at a solution. There must be open, honest debate. The public must be kept informed. The results must always address the common good.
Hard work has always been central to my endeavors and I expect that will continue if I am elected. I intend to listen to the concerns of the citizens of HD 56 and attempt to address them. I have always looked for pragmatic solutions to problems as a mother, nurse and attorney. I will continue to do so if elected.
I listen and am interested in what other people do and have to say. I am cautious . I like to get as many facts as possible before I make decisions. I realize that life is full of grey areas. There are often no right or wrong answers and compromise is often the best one can achieve.
The responsibility of a legislative representative is to determine the needs of his/her constituents and address those needs in the state legislature. If government can provide a solution, the legislative representative must do all in his/her power to assure the constituents needs are met. A legislative representative must be willing to speak up and fight for the rights of the people he/she represents.
I do not think in terms of a legacy. I try to do my best at whatever it is I am doing and hope that my actions will result on some good.
The assassination of John Kennedy stands out in my mind. I was a college student. I remember exactly where i was at the time I heard the news, as do many other people who lived through that event.
At the age of 13 i was employed in a women’s lingerie shop that was managed by a neighbor. I did odd jobs like sweeping the front of the store and sidewalk before it opened, I put together boxes in the back of the store, and made sure that all the garment hangers on the racks were facing in the right direction. If the store got busy, I might get to wait on a customer. That didn’t happen often.
I don’t recall how long I was employed at this job, but at the age of 16 I was employed as a nurses aide at a local hospital.
There is no one favorite book. But a book I have given to all my grandchildren is “Oh the Places You’ll Go” by Dr Seuss . It humorously warns children of the pit falls they may face in life, but that there are also many good things to look forward to and that they will ultimately succeed.
All parties should treat each other with respect. The opinions of all should be expressed and heard. The governor makes the ultimate decision on which bills to sign.
The population is growing. Housing is needed and being built. Water is a limited scarce resource in Colorado and I fear our elected leaders are allowing unbridled growth in our communities, without regard to the availability of water. While growth cannot be prevented it can be controlled, to the benefit of everyone.
Wildfires are a present danger in the arid western states. Colorado has had many periods of drought and the planet is warming. We must be diligent as to the dangers associated with the energy transmission sources being proposed in the eastern plains. A solution must be agreed upon that uses the safest technology available to complete the project and thus minimize the wildfire danger.
While previous experience in government may be beneficial with procedural matters, a set of fresh eyes and other life/work experiences is of greater benefit. This assumes the legislator will do the work required to become informed of all aspects of an issue. This assumes the legislator was involved in meaningful relevant employment prior to being elected.
Yes. I especially believe that legislators of different parties must get to know one another. There is much more that we have in common than separates us.
I do not believe I could model myself after John MCain, since he was a senator and of a different party. However,I admire his bravery both during his ordeal as a prisoner of war in Vietnam and also for his willingness to speak out for what he thought was right. I saw him at an airport one evening. He was quiet and unassuming and looked very tired.
I live in a rural district and have attended a number of county fairs. The fairs are an opportunity for 4H kids to display the animals they have raised and auction them off. I suspect they get some help from their more experienced, hard working parents. They earn money for college in this way. In addition they learn the value of hard work, they learn ranching skills and they understand the food chain. What has struck me is how brave and strong these children are. They have raised and cared for the animal (cow, pig, sheep) from the time it was born, and must now give it up at auction as a source of food. As an animal lover (albeit a meat eater) it made me very sad. However, these brave young children understand the circle of life and deal with it.

These are the brave hard working people of the eastern plains that I will be representing if elected.

Ps. One of the pigs was purchased by the family of the child that raised it. I like to think it will be breeding stock.
The legislature should have some input, however an emergency needs to be dealt with expeditiously, so it would depend on the nature of the emergency.
If elected, I would be a junior legislator and would need to acclimate myself to this new environment before introducing new legislation. I would familiarize myself with bills that may have been introduced and not passed, and become acquainted with other legislators before introducing a new bill. I am cautious., and like to think before I act.
To date I have been endorsed by the Teamsters Union and Andrew Boesnecker, a member of the Legislature representing HD53
The committees that are most suited to my professional background are those dealing with Health , Education and Ethics. I am a quick learner and would be willing to join any committee in which my skills would be useful.
Our government serves the people. They should be aware of how their tax dollars is being spent.
