Alex Ekstrom was a superior court judge for the Benton/Franklin Superior Court in Washington. The court presides over Benton and Franklin counties in Washington. He was appointed to the court by Governor Jay Inslee on September 9, 2014, to fill the vacancy created by the appointment of Judge Sal Mendoza, Jr. to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Washington.[1]

Ekstrom was running unopposed for election to the court in 2015.[2][3] He won re-election to the seat in 2016. Ekstrom won a four-year term in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Ekstrom received both his undergraduate and J.D. degrees from the University of Washington.[4] Before his appointment to the court, Ekstrom served as an assistant United States attorney for the Eastern District of Washington. He also previously served as a deputy prosecuting attorney for Benton and Franklin counties and worked as an attorney in private practice.[1][2]

Ekstrom provided the following statement for the Washington general election voters pamphlet:

Alex Ekstrom and his wife of 20 years, Aimee, are raising their three children in Richland, Washington: Nicholas, William and Annaliese. He has spent his entire legal career after law school in the Tri-Cities, first in private practice and then for over 18 years as a public servant. Respected by the legal community, he is known for providing a courtroom where every party is treated fairly and given an explanation for the Court’s decision, grounded in the law. Judge Ekstrom is informed, prepared and courteous to everyone in his courtroom. He brings a strong legal background, a demonstrated commitment to public service, and a devotion to family that gives him informed and appropriate judgment. As Criminal Presiding Judge, he has handled thousands of hearings, and has presided over numerous civil and criminal trials. He believes that a Judge’s duty is to uphold the law fairly, and not to legislate any personal agenda. He is honored each day to work for the people of Benton and Franklin Counties, and will continue to bring his judicial experience, leadership and integrity to the Superior Court of Benton and Franklin Counties.[5][6]

Washington held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. Candidates for district and superior court seats had to file for election by May 20, 2016. Primary elections were held on August 2, 2016, for six seats where more than two candidates filed for election. Incumbent Alex Ekstrom defeated Alicia Marie Berry in the Benton/Franklin Superior Court nonpartisan general election for Position 3.[7]

Ekstrom was re-elected without opposition to the Benton/Franklin Superior Court in 2015. Washington's general judicial election was held on November 3, 2015. The filing deadline for candidates was May 15, 2015.[3]

2010

Ekstrom ran for election to the Benton County District Court in 2010. He was defeated by Dan Kathren. He sought to fill Position 3, the seat vacated by Holly Hollenbeck.[8]
