I am a proud husband to my wife Amira, and proud Dad to our baby boy Rami, who was born earlier this year. As a family we also have one dog named Gizmo (Shih Tzu/Pomeranian mix) and one cat named Jax (Russian Blue).

As an active neighbor in the downriver community, I successfully ran for Taylor City Council in 2013, and won re-election in 2017. Upon the retirement of the State Representative, I went on to successfully run for State Representative in 2018, and went on to win re-election in 2020.

During my 4 years serving in the Michigan House of Representatives, I was proud to sit on the committees on Agriculture and Rural Development (Democratic Vice Chair), Local Government and Municipal Finance, and Regulatory Reform.

I am running to retain my position as a Wayne County Commissioner because I am eager to continue to bring fresh ideas and perspectives to the Commission. I believe government needs to be responsible and responsive to the residents it serves, and I bring that to this position.
  • Budget Oversight: The County Commission's primary function is oversight of the county budget. I am proud to serve on the Audit committee for the County, as there must be continuous oversight on the financials in order to have sound and responsible budgeting.
  • Roads/Infrastructure: Prioritizing the aging road, bridge, and under ground infrastructure will continue to be a focus of mine, especially in our township communities. There is much work to be done in our county-wide investments into infrastructure.
  • Parks/Development: The County oversees the Parks Millage and works with communities to implement the dollars they are allocated. I will ensure this continues to be a priority.
Public Safety, Roads and Infrastructure, Parks/Green Space, Economic Development, Local Community Support, and Government Oversight/Audit
A quality that I possess that make me an effective Commissioner is compassion and the ability to see issues from other point of views. I cannot tell you how many times I was able to work as a State Representative with my colleagues to get legislation passed and work in a bipartisan way.

This is also useful when handling issues that my constituents are facing. Many times the issues that people come to my office for are emotional and frustrating issues. Being a compassionate person and putting yourself in their shoes is the best way to support someone is resolving their concerns.
The chief role of the Wayne County Commission is to adopt a county budget and to enact county ordinances. The Commission also evaluates and approves contracts, appointments and rules.

As a Commissioner, your role gives you oversight authority over the budget, policies, and audit responsibilities of certain county departments. This is a key role for county governance.

First and foremost I am the husband to my wife Amira. I am also the current State Representative for Michigan's 12th House District and a member of the House Committees on Regulatory Reform, Local Government, and Agriculture. Prior to my service in the Michigan Legislature, I served for nearly 6 years on the Taylor City Council working on local issues for my home community. My last two years on the City Council, I served as the City Council Chairman. During my service on the Taylor City Council, I also served as the Director of Constituent Relations for State Representative Stephanie Chang. I served in this capacity for about 3 years.
  • Investing more in our children and their education
  • Expanding health care access for all Michiganders and make prescription medications more affordable
  • Putting more resources into our infrastructure to finally fix and maintain our roads
Detroit Free Press   Featured local question
Governor Whitmer's plan to make the first two years of college free for Michiganders is a plan I support fully. I believe this is an important tool to get our kids to stay in Michigan to get their education. The legislature must support this plan and add in the building trades programming that will allow students to pick their career field. We have to put our money where our mouth is if we want to compete to keep our talent here in Michigan. That means investing in our workforce on the front end to reap the benefits for many years to come.
Detroit Free Press   Featured local question
Our state's spending priorities should be for COVID response, Health Care, Education, and Infrastructure.
Detroit Free Press   Featured local question
Michigan is moving in the right direction with considering more transparent policies to operate under. I am proud to be a member of the Legislature that files a voluntary personal asset and financial report in order to be transparent to Michiganders. I will continue to support legislation that sheds light on our leaders and the governing process that we have here in our great state.
Detroit Free Press   Featured local question
There is no one size fits all approach to addressing the budget shortfall. You can't tax your way out of a deficit, and you can't cut your way out of one either. There has to be a good mix of first cutting where we can and then reevaluating our budget priorities. I am happy to see the progress made by legislative leaders and the Governor in handling this fiscal year's budget shortfall. We must work together to balance our state budget.
Detroit Free Press   Featured local question
I agree that Michigan has neglected its infrastructure for far too long. I give kudos to the Governor for bonding in efforts to fix Michigan's roads. The legislature failed to act over the past two decades to come up with an adequate plan to spend more on our infrastructure and for it to be sustainable. I believe the legislature needs to come up with solutions that unique and multifaceted. As a State, we also must look at trucking weight limits among other solutions. We must act now.
Detroit Free Press   Featured local question
In my first year as State Representative, I was proud to have voted for an education budget that restored much needed dollars to our classrooms. While this was a great start, we are still drastically under-funding our schools in Michigan. I will continue my fight to restore and increase education funding for our schools. Our kids and our teachers deserve the best environment to learn and teach in. An investment in our kids is an investment in Michigan's future; we must do better to support our schools.
I am passionate about mental health policy and funding. I am constantly that legislator in the room that ensures we are considering mental health and policy surrounding this subject matter. Unfortunately, there are not many that prioritize mental health and it reflects in our state budget. This is a critical consideration for health of everyone in our state. I am also passionate about local funding and investing more in our local communities. As someone that comes from local government, I know how much our communities are hurting from state statutory revenue sharing cuts. As a state, we need to look to restoring more money back to our locals in order for them to be successful.
I know my choice will likely be a popular choice, but that speaks to the standing of this individual. President Barack H. Obama is someone I along with many others look up to. President Obama is the definition of a true public servant and leader. The class and integrity that he brought to the Office of the Presidency was admirable and is sorely missed. He was/is a true leader and our children can look up to him as an example to live by.
A quality that I possess that make me an effective Legislator is compassion and the ability to see issues from other point of views. I cannot tell you how many times I was able to work with my colleagues to get legislation passed and work in a bi-partisan way. This is also useful when handling issues that my constituents are facing. Many times the issues that people come to my office for are emotional and frustrating issues. Being a compassionate person and putting yourself in their shoes is the best way to support someone is resolving their concerns.
I remember 9/11 when the World Trade Center was attacked. I remember being in elementary school (I was 7 years old) and the fear and commotion that took place. This will always stick with me as we all mourned such a tragic loss of life in our country.
The first official job I ever had was when I was 15 years old. I worked at the local Long John Silvers as a Dishwasher. I worked there for just over a year while in High School. I then left for a paid internship with the Detroit City Council.
In Michigan we have the Michigan House of Representatives (where I currently serve) and the Michigan Senate. The most important differences between the two chambers is the district sizes and the function. The House has 110 districts and the Senate has 38 districts. Our State Senate districts are significantly larger than our State House districts and this allows for Michiganders to have (2) legislative leaders working for them in the legislature at all times. The second important point is the checks and balances that each chamber has on each other. Nothing is passed unless both chambers agree and this is helpful in adopting quality legislation for the Governor's consideration.
I do believe it is beneficial for State Legislators to have previous experience in government. I am a Legislator that had 6 years of experience on the Taylor City Council before being elected to serve as a Legislator. I cannot tell you how beneficial that service was in aiding me to be a better Legislator. Understanding what our local governments face is an important point of view to have at the table when making policy that effects the way they govern.
COVID-19 has sent our state's priorities in a tail spin. I believe our challenges will be getting our state's economy to recover from the negative effects of this virus. Our businesses are hurting across the state. In turn, this has led to a skyrocketing unemployment rate and issues employers have not experienced in a long time. We must prioritize supporting our residents and businesses in order for them to stay in Michigan to help us recover from this pandemic. This will not happen overnight, but we must work to help Michiganders across this state recover from this damaging virus.
Now that Michigan has divided government, the relationship between the Governor and the State Legislature has never mattered more. With Governor Whitmer being a Democrat and our Legislature being Republican controlled, working together is a must in order to be effective as leaders of our state. There must always be open communication between legislative leaders and the Governor in order to have a good working relationship. There have been many legislative wins during divided government, and we must continue to promote bipartisanship as a good thing for our state. Democrats and Republicans can come together and find common ground to create good legislation.
I believe it is crucial to build relationships with other Legislators. During my first 18 months in office, I have built relationships on both sides of the aisle. The legislation that I have passed in the Michigan House of Representatives reflects many of those relationships. I am proud to have strong relationships in both Democrat and Republican caucuses.
My current committees are Regulatory Reform, Local Government and Municipal Finance, and Agriculture. What appealed to me about Regulatory Reform was oversight of what we are requiring people and businesses to do. Having a seat at the table to lend my thoughts is important to me and my District. Local Government was appealing to me as a former City Councilman. I lend a unique perspective to this committee as a former local elected official. Lastly, Agriculture has been the committee I have learned most from. Supporting our local agriculture industry is important to many across our state and I am happy to be apart of supporting this industry.
Congressman John D. Dingell Jr. is someone I respected a great deal. His approach to government was something I feel is a dying among our current elected officials. Being cordial and working for your constituents first and not worrying about the politics is something that should be continued. I look to his as a role model on how to work for those that have entrusted you to represent them.
There are many touching personal stories that I hear from constituents in my district. I always think about Jessica who is a single mother of 3 I met at the Capitol. She came up to visit the Capitol with children last year and is from my district. She is a single mother that has a 6, 8, and 11 year old. She has juggled working full time, going to school to be a nurse, and raising her children for 4 years. All while struggling to make ends meet. Her story is a story of success and perseverance. This is the type of grit we talk about when speaking about Michiganders. I don't know how she did it, but she is now a nurse and is working on the front lines for our state. Stories like this give me hope that we can do better for our people and give them the tools to succeed and make their lives a little easier.

Scorecards

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.

Click here for an overview of legislative scorecards in all 50 states.  To contribute to the list of Michigan scorecards, email suggestions to editor@ballotpedia.org.
