Candidate Connection

Alexander Glew participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 19, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Alexander Glew's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Resolve unfunded pension liability. Improve public transportation and freeways to create access to more land and more affordable housing.[4][2]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I prioritize the following areas of public policy: responsible finance, infrastructure, and education.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[2]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Alexander Glew answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

A public official must want what is fair and best for most people. The official must be able to understand and comprehend complicated problems and data, but reduce it to straight forward solutions.[2]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I have empathy for people, both the weak and the strong, which is the first requirement. Next, I am hard working and educated, and have many skills that would serve the district, specifically the Silicon Valley and surrounding areas. I am an engineer and business person, and understand the challenges that businesses and employees face in our region. Further, I was born and raised in the area, and understand the past, and can chart a future that preserves what we can while embracing what is good in the new.[2]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The core responsibility of an elected public official is to fulfill the duties of their office.[2]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
I remember the moon walk in 1969.[2]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I was an engineer, then a manager and core technologist at Applied Materials. This was my first job and I held it for a decade, before returning to school.[2]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. I like to be home with family celebrating the peace and prosperity that we have dating back to the pilgrims.[2]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
California needs to learn to live within its financial means, which includes resolving the unfunded pension liability while improving the decaying infrastructure to provide better highways, public transportation, water storage and information (internet access) befitting the great State of CA.[2]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
The CA State Legislature and Governor should have a generally shared vision and productive working relationship, while still allowing for debate, whereby the former creates laws that the latter can execute for the betterment of the people.[2]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
It is beneficial to build relationships with other legislators on both sides of the aisle to ensure that communications remain open and free. Without healthy communications, it is difficult to resolve differences and work towards positive solutions.[2]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
It should be bi-partisan and technically correct, without manipulation for political benefit.[2]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
I believe that there are many important committees, but I would like to be part of technology, education, and transportation. With a Doctorate in Engineering from Stanford and degrees from UC Berkeley, I am uniquely qualified to serve on these committees and help the district.[2]

Campaign website

Glew’s campaign website stated the following:

My goal is to resolve these large issues without raising overall taxes. CA already has among the highest taxes in the USA but provides poor service to its residents. We need to regulate the CA State Government, not the good people of CA.

1. Resolve the Trillion Dollar Unfunded Pension Liability: Safety for both the State and the employees pensions

2. Increase Transportation Infrastructure: Highways and Regional Public Transportation: Allow people to build more affordable houses farther from city centers but still get to work quickly.

3. Build Water Infrastructure: Increase water supply and drought safety.

4. Reform Education: Increase the educational results and school effectiveness. CA Business needs work force availability.

5. Reduce Crime: Create a middle ground between where we were (3 strikes) and where we are with crime increasing rapidly. Serial crimes need to be prosecuted.

6. Reduce business regulation to create more housing and jobs.

7. Tort reform and litigation reform in CA.[2]
