I'm Alex Newman, a nonprofit executive and dedicated community advocate running for Edmonds City Council, Position 3. My background spans years of leadership in humanitarian and public-interest organizations, where I’ve managed tight budgets, responded to natural disasters, and led with compassion and accountability. I’m running to bring that same energy and experience to local government, with a strong focus on public safety, affordability, and environmental protection. I believe Edmonds deserves thoughtful, transparent leadership that delivers results and listens to the community.
  • Environmental Protection Our parks are not for sale. Public lands must stay public. I’ve worked on the frontlines of the climate crisis, and I know how urgent local action is. I’ll protect Edmonds’ natural spaces, invest in green infrastructure, and push for climate and community resilience policies which safeguard our community for future generations.
  • Affordability Edmonds is becoming less affordable for working families, seniors, and young people. I’m committed to keeping Edmonds a place where people can live, work, and retire with dignity. That means expanding housing options, supporting renters, and making sure essential city services remain accessible.
  • Public Safety with a Purpose Everyone deserves to feel safe. I support our first responders and also believe in community-based approaches that address the root causes of violence. I’ll advocate for stronger emergency preparedness, school safety, and violence prevention programs that protect all Edmonds residents.
I’m passionate about advancing public safety, environmental stewardship, and affordability in Edmonds. I believe local government must act boldly and equitably from protecting our tree canopy, in all of our neighborhoods from Firdale to Meadowdale, and our shorelines, from the Sound to Lake Ballinger; to ensure housing stability and abundance, and well-resourced emergency response systems.
The Righteous Mind - Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt is the most important book to understand why we are divided and how we can communicate across differences to work together toward common goals.
Integrity, accessibility, and transparency are essential traits for any elected official. I believe good governance begins with listening and culminates in action that reflects the needs of the people.
In addition to my work on public policy and community advocacy, I’ve led teams in crisis response, coordinated logistics in disaster zones, and delivered critical services with limited resources. Whether it’s managing our local Red Cross, leading large scale disaster responses across the country, or resettling thousands of Afghan allies in the US, know how to get things done under pressure, keep people informed, and build coalitions that solve real problems.
City Councilmembers define policy for everything from city budgets and infrastructure to zoning and emergency planning. They must balance long-term strategy with the everyday realities of residents, acting as both policymakers and community liaisons.

With Edmonds working through a financial crisis, we need proven leaders who can do more with less. As a non-profit executive, I’ve helped manage large-scale operations on small budgets and will bring that same resourceful, transparent approach to city spending and prioritizing what truly serves our residents.
