  • My name is Alec Clowes and I’m running for re-election to the Southern Mono Healthcare District board of directors, which operates Mammoth Hospital. With your support I aim to maintain the quality care and fiscal discipline which has made Mammoth Hospital so effective.
  • I have lived in Mammoth Lakes since 2019 with my wife and we have a 3 year old son. Hiking and biking are my favorite summer sports and in the winter I’m out skiing or telemarking. I work remotely as a software engineer but we also run two local businesses, Bevi Bene and Station 81. I graduated from Stanford University with a bachelor’s degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
  • One of my favorite roles as a board member is serving on the Quality Assurance committee. This committee reviews the work of internal teams that are tasked with ensuring patient safety, quality care, and performance improvement.
Having worked on software for a startup that tracks such metrics and presents recommendations to the doctor while they are with the patient, I’m excited to see Mammoth Hospital investing in the tools and processes needed to provide patients with the preventative and disease management care they deserve.
Mammoth Hospital has been profitable, which I think can be attributed to a number of factors. We are lucky that Mammoth Mountain and other recreational opportunities draw so many people to the area and thus patients to the hospital. These visitors generally have good insurance that reimburse us well.
Secondly, the hospital is diligent in managing costs. Every medical system in the country including ours is undergoing a shift from inpatient, i.e. overnight stays, to outpatient and observation as practices and insurance policies change. This requires us to be more efficient when providing treatment, which requires skilled people working effectively. The board receives monthly reports on the financials including patient volumes and costs.
Healthcare districts can raise money with voter consent via general obligation bonds that are paid off via property tax, or districts can issue revenue bonds that are paid off by the district itself. Southern Mono Healthcare district has in the past raised general obligation bonds. For the upcoming North Wing project we plan to raise money with a revenue bond, i.e. without asking voters for an additional tax. We are able to do this because we have over $100 million in reserves and a healthy operating profit.
