Alexander Lipsey is a judge for the 9th Circuit Court in Kalamazoo County, Michigan. He was appointed to this position by Democratic Governor Jennifer Granholm on July 19, 2007, to replace retired Judge Philip Schaefer.[1] He was re-elected in 2008, 2010, and 2016.[2]

Education

Lipsey received a bachelor's degree in physics from Kalamazoo College in 1972 and a J.D. from the University of Michigan in 1977.[3]

Career

Lipsey is a former private practice bankruptcy attorney, Chapter 7 and 13 Trustee, and an attorney for UAW GM Legal Services Plan. He also served on the Kalamazoo City Commission from 1989 to 1995 and was the vice-mayor there from 1993 to 1995. After spending five years as a Chapter 7 trustee, he was elected to the Michigan House of Representatives, where he served from 2000 to 2006 (3 terms). He then served as general counsel to the House prior to his appointment to the circuit court in 2007.[1][3]

Michigan held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election occurred on August 2, 2016. The candidate filing deadline for incumbents was March 21, and the deadline for non-incumbents was April 19.[4] Incumbent Stephen Gorsalitz and incumbent Alexander Lipsey were unopposed in the 9th Circuit general election (2 open seats).[2]

Lipsey was re-elected (along with Judge Stephen Gorsalitz) in the general election on November 2, 2010 with 53.98 percent of the vote.[5]
