Alexander R. Meadows
Alexander Meadows was a 2014 Progressive Party candidate for District 66 of the New York State Assembly.
Campaign themes
2014
Meadows' campaign website highlighted the following issues:[1]
Affordable Housing
- Excerpt: "In Albany, I will fight to: Repeal the Urstadt Law and give New York City full control over its rent regulations."
Seniors
- Excerpt: "With housing, healthcare, food, and utility costs continuing to rise, seniors on fixed incomes are facing unprecedented challenges. As your Assembly member, I will fight to help seniors stay in their apartments by working with local, state and federal officials."
- Excerpt: "I will also advocate for fully funding senior centers, meal programs, and for expansion of New York's Elderly Pharmaceutical Insurance Coverage (EPIC) program to ensure that every senior in need has access to these critical programs."
Healthcare
- Excerpt: "I will draw on my extensive knowledge of the NYS healthcare system and how it operates to work closely with elected officials. This will ensure a straightforward Health Benefit Exchange program is implemented in our district. Further, this will allow small businesses and individuals to obtain quality, affordable coverage. I know how to work through the insurance companies red tape and will be a vocal advocate for our city’s patients. This is sound fiscal policy."
Immigration
- Excerpt: "I will make it a priority to work with legislators on both sides of the aisle to ensure this bill [New York DREAM Act] gets passed by the state senate and sent to the Governors desk to be signed into law. So that all New Yorkers are free to access higher education and the opportunities that come with it."
Protecting Animals
- Excerpt: "I'm an animal lover, and on the New York State Assembly, I will work to protect defenseless animals that need a voice. I support a ban on horse-drawn cabs in New York City. While some horses are treated well, accidents, cramped living space, and inadequate regulation forces many of these beautiful animals to lead miserable lives."
- Excerpt: "I also support reform to our city's shelters. the plight of shelter animals-- epidemic disease and a lack of transparency has left many otherwise adoptable animals doomed to be euthanized. We can, and we must, do better."
