Alexander Smith Johnson
Alexander Smith Johnson (1817-1878) was a federal judge on the United States Circuit Courts for the Second Circuit. He joined the court in 1875 after a recess appointment from Ulysses Grant. At the time of his appointment, he was a judge for the State of New York Court of Appeals. He served until his death on January 26, 1878.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments
Second Circuit
He received a recess appointment from President Ulysses Grant on October 25, 1875 and was nominated on December 15, 1875 to fill the vacancy left by Lewis Bartholomew Woodruff . He was confirmed by the Senate on December 15, 1875, and received commission that same day. He served until his death on January 26, 1878. He was succeeded by Samuel Blatchford.[1]
