I am a father, an attorney, a law professor, a small business owner, a veteran, a mentor, an advocate for underserved communities, and Central Florida is where I call home. I was raised in Central Florida, and graduated from Lake Brantley High School. I received my undergraduate degree from University of Central Florida, and earned my law degree from Florida A&M University College of Law. Throughout my life, I have demonstrated a commitment to public service and supporting our communities. I began my career as an Assistant Public Defender, representing litigants who were unable to afford private legal representation. I spent seven years on active duty as an officer and Army lawyer in the United States Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps, including a deployment to Afghanistan. Since returning home, I've opened my own law firm and continue to serve our country in the rank of Major as an Army reservist. Now more than ever, we need bold leadership in Tallahassee. My life experiences have prepared me to be a voice for our communities and bring representation back to the people. I will be honored to represent the residents of Seminole and Volusia Counties as your next State Senator bringing my same commitment to this new mission.
  • Public service is a public trust, and our elected officials owe accountability and transparency to all Floridians. As a legislator, I will close budget loopholes and ensure tax dollars are used for their intended purposes. During these unprecedented times, I will demand additional relief for individuals, families and businesses hit the hardest by the pandemic. I will prioritize the well-being of our communities and support an economic recovery and reopening plan that balances public health and safety interests. With your vote, I will fight for increases in salaries for all teachers, investments in affordable housing, expansion of Medicaid, protection for our environmental and rural boundaries, and police reform to build safer communities.
  • As a business owner, I understand the day-to-day challenges of running a business. Small business is the backbone of our economy and I support initiatives that provide sustainable pathways for business growth. Despite having the fourth largest GDP and one of the fastest-growing economies in the U.S. in 2019, Florida now has one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. This alarming statistic stems from Florida's over-reliance on tourism which is hit the hardest during economic recessions. As the third largest state, Florida should be an economic leader-this starts with allocating more funding for the growth and development of businesses throughout our communities and for advancements in innovation and technology.
  • I am the product of the Seminole County Public School system and have experienced, firsthand, the value a solid education provides. Now as a parent, I impress upon my daughter the importance of education. I firmly believe a quality education directly affects all other facets of life such as employment, access to healthcare, and housing. Our children are our future, and the gradual defunding of our public-school system has impressed upon our teachers an impossible burden of providing quality education with inadequate resources. By investing in education, we are empowering our communities to develop creative ways to tackle the issues impacting our quality of life.
As a former public defender, racial inequity in the criminal legal system deeply resonates with me. In Florida and across the U.S., Blacks comprise less than 20% of the total population, yet reflect half of the prison population. The explanation for this phenomenon stems from the systemic marginalization of Black communities in education, housing, and employment. Until we are ready to address inequities in those key areas, we will continue to experience disproportionate representation of Blacks in the criminal legal system. I would introduce changes to minimum mandatory sentencing laws which are used as a tool to benefit private prisons. I would also overhaul Florida's direct filing policy which prosecutes more youth as adults than any other state.
I've had a job every day of my life since I was legally able to work at 14. My first job was as an office assistant at Pediatric Dental Care of Greater Orlando. I worked there for two months the summer after 8th grade. Monday through Friday, Dr. Taylor would pick me up from my home in Apopka at 7:00am for the 45 minute drive to his office in Oviedo. This was back when 436 was just one lane in each direction! I learned how to sterilize instruments, develop X-rays, and set-up examination stations based on patients' needs. Most of all, I learned the value of discipline and hard work, and I am forever grateful for Dr. Taylor. He's also the architect of my smile.
