Alia Moses is the chief judge on the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas. She joined the court in 2002 after being nominated by President George W. Bush. Moses became chief judge in 2022.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Eagle Pass, Texas, Moses graduated from Texas Woman's University with her bachelor's degree in 1983 and from the University of Texas Law School with her J.D. in 1986.[2]

Moses, who was nominated under the name Alia M. Ludlum, was nominated on July 11, 2002, by President George W. Bush to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas vacated by Harry Hudspeth. The American Bar Association rated Moses Substantial Majority Well Qualified, Minority Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Moses' nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 18, 2002, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on October 8, 2002. Moses was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on November 14, 2002, and she received her commission the next day.[2][3][4] Since 2022, Moses has served as the Chief Judge since 2022. [1]
