Recall supporters

Former City Councilmember Don Duff initiated the recall campaign in May 2022, alongside Creeda Faegre, Venera Monahan, David Laschinger, and Shirley Martin.[1][3]

The petition said that the primary ground for the recall was a meme that Maguire had posted on Facebook in January 2022, which criticized former Denton County Transportation Authority member Chris Watts. Maguire later removed the meme from the post, which can be read here. Duff offered the following sheet explaining the motivation for the recall campaign.[3]

Recall opponents

Maguire removed the meme from her Facebook post, but said that she stood by her criticism of Watts' record on public transportation systems in Denton. She gave the following comment on the recall campaign to the Denton Record-Chronicle: "Petitioners are required to state their reason, but their reason doesn’t necessarily have to be a good one. ... Wanting to see me out of office is a good enough reason. This isn’t a step that I would have taken if I were in their position, but they’re exercising their rights."[3]

District 2 City Councilmember Brian Beck came out against the recall campaign, saying, "There’s no corruption, there’s no conflicts of interests they’re citing; they’re citing a meme post, and we know that this is all about changing leadership instead. ... I do not believe their explanation at all. I simply don’t believe them. I think this is a political ploy, and I’m really disappointed that a former councilor is playing these kinds of games with democracy in the city of Denton."[3]
