The Alliance for Excellent Education (AEE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that focuses on education policy. It aims to ensure "that all students, particularly those who are traditionally underserved, graduate from high school ready for success in college, work, and citizenship."[1] The group publishes research on educational practices for digital learning and is a proponent of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.
Mission
According to its website, the Alliance for Excellent Education's mission is as follows:[1]
“ | The mission of the Alliance for Excellent Education is to promote high school transformation to make it possible for every child to graduate prepared for postsecondary learning and success in life.[2] | ” |
Background
In 1999, Gerard and Lilo Leeds founded and served as the first chair and vice-chair of the Alliance for Excellent Education (AEE). In 1990, the two had started the Institute for Student Achievement, a group that worked "in partnership with low-performing school districts to help at-risk middle and high school students."[3] They began AEE to perform a similar function but with a focus on "the development and implementation of federal and national policies that support effective high school reform and increased student achievement and attainment."[1]
The AEE continues to work towards these goals through programs in "deeper learning," digital learning and by promoting changes to the No Child Left Behind Act and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.[4]
From 2005 to 2013, the AEE received eight grants from the Carnegie Corporation to develop its initiatives.[5] The group is also a partner in the College-Ready Education Initiative sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; since 2003, the Gates Foundation has given AEE a total of 13 grants.[6]
Work
The Alliance for Excellent Education (AEE) works to advocate for students in public schools who are at high risk of leaving the school system before graduating high school. The group seeks change in the public school system by advocating more rigorous delivery of core content and by promoting "deeper learning," an educational model built on "the delivery of rich core content to students in innovative ways that allow them to learn and then apply what they have learned."[7] AEE also works to promote promising practices in digital learning through its Center for Digital Learning and Policy.[8]
The AEE has supported the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSS), saying: "The CCSS have the potential to transform teaching and learning in this country, ensuring that students master key concepts and skills that form the powerful building blocks of lifelong learners. They also hold the promise that high expectations will exist for all students, regardless of their zip code."[9]
The AEE has published a number of reports and fact sheets about educational legislation and best teaching practices.[10]
