The Alliance of California Judges was a nonprofit organization that sought "to independently advocate on behalf of judges and communicate with the public, media, and executive and legislative branches of [California] state government." The group was founded in 2009. According to its website, the organization included over 500 California judges as of January 2024.[1]

In January 2024, the organization announced it would pause operations.[2]

Background

The Alliance of California Judges was founded in 2009 in response to a funding dispute with the California Administrative Office of the Courts. The group's initial goal was to create legislation for a "Bill of Rights" that would give trial courts a greater voice in the management and funding decisions of the state. In an open letter to judges in the state, the organization wrote, "The Alliance exists to provide a very targeted voice on governance and budgeting. We are not advocating any ultimate budget outcome for our courts. We are urging reaffirmation of the primacy of local court management mandated by Government Code section 77001. We advocate full participation of our local courts in the critical budget and management decisions our courts are facing."[3]

As of January 2024, the Alliance of California Judges provided the following mission on its website:

  • To ensure that our courts remain open and accessible
  • To ensure accountable local management of the California courts
  • To guarantee financial responsibility
  • To ensure a strong preference for local flexibility in the conduct of court affairs[4][5]
