Three of the seven seats on the Alpine School District school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. In District 4, Mark Clement defeated Rachel Thacker for the open seat. District 6 incumbent Scott Carlson defeated Miriam Ellis to win re-election to his seat. Newcomer Sara Hacken won the District 7 seat after defeating Joe Rivest.[1]

A primary election was held on June 28, 2016. In District 4, Verlene West lost in the primary election, and Cristie Wood withdrew from the race. David Cox and Chris Jones also withdrew from the District 6 race, while Karrie Wilbur lost in the primary election. District 7 candidate Kirby Glad did not advance to the general election, and John Todd Ashman dropped out of the race.

The Alpine school board consists of seven members elected by district to four-year terms. A primary election was held on June 28, 2016, and a general election was held on November 8, 2016, for three seats.[2]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 17, 2016.[1]

The Alpine school board election shared the ballot with federal elections for President of the United States, United States Senate, and United States Representative. I hope to bring empathy for others, the ability to solve problems, a listening ear, and collaborative expertise. Since I taught in Alpine District for 30 years I feel that I have a deep understanding of the daily demands of teaching and the needs of students, parents, and teachers.[6]

Alpine School District is located in Utah County, Utah. The county seat is Provo. Utah County was home to 575,205 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[9] The district was the largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 73,975 students.[10]

Demographics

Utah County overperformed in comparison to Utah as a whole in terms of higher education achievement and median household income from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 36.9 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 30.6 percent of all state resident. The median household income in Utah County was $60,830, compared to $59,846 for the entire state. The poverty rate in the county was 12.6 percent, compared to 11.3 percent for the entire state.[9]
