Heavy inflation and a housing crisis require leadership with expertise and skills in drafting, passing, and enforcing policies and law that help people keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. I am running for Mayor of Lemon Grove because my skillset uniquely fits this type of leadership need.

Twenty years of litigation and policy experience in helping working families, seniors, and marginalized members of our community have forged me into a person adept at finding solutions to tough problems.

I also have served our community as a parent volunteer at Lemon Grove Little League and AYSO soccer, at the Lemon Grove food distribution, and as community service chair for the Lemon Grove Latino Diversified Lions Club.

Moreover, we have a large Spanish-speaking population in our community and my fluency in Spanish helps communicate with and serve our Hispanic population more effectively.

My strength is in my ability to bring together coalitions, even when members may not see eye to eye on everything, to get done what needs to get done. This is the type of Mayor the City of Lemon Grove needs—one with experience in helping working families make it in tough financial times and who knows how to get things done. I am a hard worker who will work hard for Lemon Grove.
  • Streets, storm drains, sidewalks, and streetlights. Almost a decade ago, Lemon Grove struggled financially as a city. In recent years, however, including during the pandemic, Lemon Grove achieved modest revenue growth year after year. Unfortunately, the prior years of austerity and belt tightening has left a lot of deferred maintenance on our infrastructure--$151 million in deferred maintenance on our streets, sidewalks, and storm drains. This deferred infrastructure work needs addressing now. The January 2024 floods really tested Lemon Grove's infrastructure and the City did not fare well. Repairing our streets, building new sidewalks, installing more street lighting, and fixing our storm drains are one of my top priorities.
  • Housing and homelessness. Addressing housing and homelessness is a top priority. Lemon Grove historically was a place you could afford to buy your first home. That’s one of the reasons we chose to raise our family here. We could afford a home on a Legal Aid salary. While housing prices have skyrocketed, I want Lemon Grove to be the place you can afford to buy your first home. We need more townhomes, condos, and starter homes available for purchase. We also need to keep people in their homes. Helping people stay housed and helping those experiencing homelessness is critical for our working families and seniors. I am working on building partnerships with the County, State, and East County region to address these housing issues.
  • Financial Stability and Business Development. One of my key priorities when I ran for City Council was improving our business environment. In my City Council role, I have worked with the East County Economic Development Council and the East Area Chamber of Commerce to bring resources to our business community. I am a member of California Jobs First, which will distribute COVID-related financial assistance to disinvested communities, like Lemon Grove. As our businesses thrive, our community prospers. Further, Measure T, the sales tax initiative, is another component to helping Lemon Grove improve and invest in itself. It will help with road repair and bring back community favorites, like parades, fairs, and park activities.
I am passionate about ensuring that middle class and working-class families are able to make ends meet and be able to look forward to retirement, that seniors do not have to worry whether they will become homeless, and that we do our best to make sure all of our children and grandchildren can enjoy clean, safe water and have breathable air. I am passionate about making sure that financial systems do not unfairly and discriminatorily impact any race, religion, or other group.

My top public policy areas of focus are, therefore, housing justice, consumer and economic justice, clean energy and environmental justice, and racial justice.
I respect all faiths and cultures. For myself, I am a Christian. I try to follow the example of Jesus Christ as best I can. For me, he set an example of perfectly balancing love, mercy, and justice and his version of leadership was a service-oriented model.
Integrity, transparency, collaborative, and hard working.
The Mayor of Lemon Grove's core responsibilities are to provide policy vision, develop and build relationships and collaborative partnerships with regional, County, State, and federal government partners and our business community, and to communicate with the Lemon Grove residents. The responsibilities require making tough decisions for the betterment of the entire community.
A world where we better care for our seniors, neighbors, and all community members from housing, to clean water and air, to reduced violence and greater peace
Babysitting and nannying since I was twelve. Then, at 15 years old, I worked for the summer at Idaho Citizen's Network going door-to-door helping raise funds to revamp Idaho's medical insurance system. After the summer, I worked part-time through high school at Little Caesers Pizza and another part-time gig going door-to door for Midas selling automotive coupons with a shirt that said "Nobody Beats Me" on it.
This is too hard to pick one. I am currently reading Shiny Misfits by Maysoon Zayid with my granddaughter. We love the Audible version! We listen to it in the car. Funny and heartwarming.

Watching financial stress take a toll on my parents and their relationship. Losing my brother-in-law to a drunk driver and watching my sister raise their three boys on her own. Helping my dad brave a losing battle with prostate cancer. My own health issues caused by car accidents. Raising five kids--a struggle and also the best thing ever.
My view of a leader is one that serves the community, works hard to achieve the community goals, and that is willing to step up and do the hard things that will benefit the city overall.
The mayor's top priority should be to lead the City with a vision toward the future. The city manager executes the day-to-day tasks to achieve that vision. The vision should include financial prosperity, street and infrastructure functionality, environmental preservation, and community recreation.

Lemon Grove's volunteers--from graffiti, to clean ups, to recreational sports. Our teachers, staff, and school board. Lemon Grove businesses that are always giving back. My neighbors. I just love Lemon Grovers, period. It's why we picked Lemon Grove to raise our five kids and now our grandkids here.
Tackling the $151 million in deferred street, storm drain, and infrastructure maintenance while trying to meet and adjust to the changing demands of climate and business needs.
State leadership that responds to local City's needs and provides resources while not overstepping and creating laws prevent cities from establishing policies that protect, keep safe, and enrich their communities.
We have carefully carved out the roles and areas of authority for the national, state, and local government. Federal government is best equipped to handle national issues, like inflation, immigration, the military, and taxes. Local cities are focused on the roads, streets, business, and housing. Ideally, cities are able to make policies that work for their specific communities' needs while the federal government focuses on broader societal issues.

Financial transparency is critical. Taxpayers should be able to understand, see, and verify how their precious tax dollars are being spent. Government accountability for how it spends those tax dollars is an essential part of the process to making sure the money goes where it is most needed and beneficial to all of the community members.
