Amalya Lyle Kearse is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. She joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. At the time of her appointment, she was in private practice in New York City. Kearse assumed senior status on June 11, 2002.[1]

Early life and education

Born in Vauxhall, New Jersey, Kearse graduated from Wellesley College with her bachelor's degree in 1959, and from the University of Michigan Law School with her J.D. in 1962.[1]

Professional career

Kearse was in private practice in New York from 1962 to 1979. She was an adjunct lecturer at the New York University School of Law from 1968 to 1969.[1] In 1979, Judge Kearse became the first woman to be elected to a fellowship in the American College of Trial Lawyers. Kearse was a member of the University of Michigan Law School Committee of Visitors from 1971 to 1979.[2]

Kearse was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit by President Jimmy Carter on May 3, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. Kearse was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 19, 1979, and she received her commission on June 21, 1979. Kearse assumed senior status on June 11, 2002.[1] She was succeeded to this post by Reena Raggi.
