Campaign themes

2014

On her campaign website, Dealey highlighted the following issues:[1]

Transportation

  • Excerpt: "Transportation continues to top just about everyone’s list of what they hate about Austin. Decisions made both by City Councils and voters in the past have delayed implementation of mass transit systems that might have alleviated this problem, but back then I don’t think anyone foresaw the huge influx of residents to this area. With about 100 people a day moving to Austin, and probably 50-75 cars with them, we need to act now. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix, which means we need to move as quickly as possible to attack this problem on several fronts, including both mass transit and roads, to try to help folks move through and around the city with as little headache as possible. Looking for short terms solutions, such as telecommuting where possible, should also be a goal. Transportation is one of the largest expenses in most people’s homes, so finding ways of transporting more people more efficiently and inexpensively will be a step toward achieving affordability in Austin."

Water

  • Excerpt: "Austinites have done a good job of reducing our consumption of water, but we need to make sure we get the best use of the water we do have while continuing to identify additional means of conservation. Making gray water accessible to greater areas of town for irrigation and cooling will be an important step while we continue to conserve and look for new water resources for our burgeoning city."

Affordability

  • Excerpt: "Making Austin a city where people of all economic strata can live is challenging, and the city government must work constantly at containing costs. We all know that market forces have driven up the cost of housing, so trying to make property taxes equitable and reasonable will be important. I will look for as many opportunities to cut costs and improve efficiencies as possible. One important asset we have to help control costs is our Electric utility, which contributes substantially to the general revenue each year, and making it efficient and effective affects affordability in Austin."

Taxation

  • Excerpt: "District 10 is one of the largest geographically, with a preponderance of single family homes and some of the most expensive real estate in the city. That means some of the heaviest tax burdens fall within this district, and tax base here is the highest outside downtown. Our homes, for most of us one of our most valuable assets, are also where we raise our families. I want to make sure that decisions I make as a Council member protect our homes and our neighborhoods and that I am a good steward of your assets, both economic and personal."

The city of Austin held elections for city council on November 4, 2014. The candidate filing deadline was August 18, 2014. Because of redistricting and term limits, there was no incumbent for District 10.[2] The candidates were Marjorie "Margie" Burciaga, Audrey "Tina" Cannon, Amanda "Mandy" Dealey, Sheri P. Gallo, Matthew L. Lamon, Jason W. Meeker, Robert D. Thomas and William L. Worsham.[3] Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the general election, the top two vote-getters - Dealey and Gallo - faced each other in a runoff election on December 16, 2014.[4] Gallo was the winner.[5]
