Oaks' campaign website stated the following:

Values and Priorities

Integrity

Deeply committed to the democratic process, I value each and every voice, and hold myself accountable to the families I represent.

  • Accountability – Every board meeting there is time set aside for public comment. I have also held regular town hall meetings since the beginning of my tenure (six in total), and will continue to do so. I attend school community councils (SCC's) for each of my schools each year, and am also available by email or over the phone.

  • Position on Critical Race Theory (CRT) - CRT has no place in Utah schools, and I commit to keep it out. I also recognize that the Utah State Board of Education R277-328 is required of all Utah public schools, and allows for the principles of diversity and inclusion to be discussed appropriately. Appreciating the varied perspectives and life experiences of people from different backgrounds enriches us all.

  • Parent Involvement – effective two-way communication and parent feedback so that the needs of my community are being met. See: Customer Service Infographic, created by Amanda and Canyons Communications department to empower parents in knowing how to effectively advocate for their children's educational experience when difficulties arise.

  • Safety - implementation of the SafeUT app, lockdown and safety-in-place drills, assistance with school psychologists and social workers, having school resource officers on site, using funds to rebuild/remodel schools with new surveillance systems, automatic locks that require employees to have an ID badge to gain entry, and strategically located entryways and exits.

Innovation

I believe in preparing Canyons students with the skills and aptitudes necessary to navigate the changing landscape of emerging local and national marketplaces.

  • District Strategic Plan – begin to implement the vision set forth by parents and teachers to propel Canyon School District forward.

  • 5 C’s + 1 - In order to produce a student prepared to take up the challenges they will encounter in the future
  • Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Curiosity, Critical thinking, Problem solving

  • Quality Arts Instruction - Recognizes the arts as part of the common core and provides opportunities for every student to meaningfully participate at every level. Works to incorporate the arts and creativity into core subject areas. Ensures that the new elementary language arts curriculum (Wonders) allows for the use of arts integration in each classroom.

  • Personalized Learning - allow every student to learn effectively at his/her own pace.

  • STEM - find ways to incorporate STEM learning earlier and more meaningfully, in order to prepare Canyons students to take up jobs in the robust tech industry here in Utah.

  • Point Working Group Committee - Continue my involvement with one of the committees addressing the future of the Point of the Mountain development. Trailblaze the way for innovative education space at the 700 acre Point development in Draper. I commit to continue seeking ways to build forward-thinking Canyons School District educational partnerships with the tech and scientific industries hoping to settle there.

Compassion

I believe in the potential of every student, and that they deserve the opportunity to meaningfully learn, no matter their ability level or circumstances.

  • Opportunities for meaningful learning and experiences for ALL students - Every student deserves the opportunity to learn at their own pace. Students need to be met where they are, and assisted to progress and reach their potential. This includes better support for special education (IEP) and students with 504’s, particularly at the middle and high Ievels.

  • Social and Emotional Learning - I do not support transformative social and emotional learning (SEL), and feel that the district should instead focus on character-based education that incorporates the principles of hard work, resilience, lifelong learning, honesty, integrity, responsibility, service, respect, and personal growth. These are all character traits that the Canyons School Board recently incorporated into the new strategic plan, meant to function as a road map for the district for years to come.

  • Mental and behavioral health supports - providing opportunities for students and their parents to opt into additional supports as they face unprecedented rates of distress post-pandemic.

  • Fairness – Amanda’s legal training has trained her to understand and consider many different perspectives, nuances, and facets to every decision. She has demonstrated a firm commitment to listen fairly to every voice, and work collaboratively with her fellow board members to make decisions that positively impact the students of Canyons School District.

  • Community - The idea of being able to work as a cohesive community is possible, as we work to put the needs of students first and foremost–together.
