Amos Louis Mazzant III is the chief judge with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. He joined the court in 2014 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. In 2025, Mazzant became the chief judge of the court.[1]
Prior to his nomination, he was a federal magistrate judge on the same court.
Early life and education
A native of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania, Mazzant earned his bachelor's degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987 and his J.D. from Baylor University School of Law in 1990.[1]

Mazzant was nominated by President Barack Obama on June 26, 2014, to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas vacated by Judge T. John Ward. The American Bar Association rated Mazzant Substantial Majority Well Qualified, Minority Qualified for the nomination.[2] Hearings on Mazzant's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 9, 2014, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on November 20, 2014. Mazzant was confirmed on a voice vote of the U.S. Senate on December 16, 2014, and he received his commission on December 19, 2014.[1][3] Mazzant became chief judge of the court in 2025.[1]
