Amy DeGise is an at-large member of the Jersey City Council in New Jersey. She assumed office on January 1, 2022. Her current term ends on December 31, 2025.

DeGise ran for election for an at-large seat of the Jersey City Council in New Jersey. She won in the general election on November 2, 2021.

Biography

DeGise's professional experience includes working as a history teacher. She was also elected to be the recording secretary for the Hudson County Area Vocational Technical Association Executive Board and has served as its instructional vice president. DeGise earned her master's degree in educational technology and her bachelor's degree concentrating in history education Montclair State University.[1]

In the first election following the return of local control to the district, four of the nine seats on the Jersey City Public Schools Board of Education in New Jersey were up for at-large general election on November 7, 2017. Three seats were up for regular three-year terms and one seat was up for a one-year unexpired term after former board member John Reichart resigned from the board.

Board members Amy DeGise and Lorenzo Richardson won additional three-year terms on the board and were joined in their victory by Matthew Schapiro. They defeated incumbent Gerald Lyons and challenger Yousef Saleh. Mussab Ali took the one-year term, defeating David Miranda.[2]

On July 19, 2022, DeGise was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure to report an accident after hitting a cyclist with her car in an intersection. The cyclist sustained minor injuries. DeGise turned herself in to the police later the same day.[5] At a council meeting in August, DeGise said, "July 19 and the weeks that have followed have been some of the most difficult, traumatic times of my life. I am grateful that no one was seriously injured and I feel horrible about that situation."[6]

DeGise appeared in court on January 24, 2023, where she pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident. DeGise had her license revoked for one year and was charged a fine of $5,000. The other charge was dropped as part of her plea agreement.[7]
