Amy Speers was a candidate for the District 4 seat on the Adams 12 Five Star School Board in Colorado. She was ruled ineligible to run for the seat on October 29, 2013 after Adams 12 Five Star district administrators discovered that her home residence was not located within District 4.[1] She released a statement following the decision apologizing for what she labeled an "oversight" and claiming that the district's election official had confirmed in August that she had "met all of the legal requirements" to be a candidate in District 4.[2] Her name remained on the ballot as disqualification took place after ballots were printed. The county certified Speers as the winner but state law requires the board to fill the seat with a temporary replacement within 60 days of the election.[3]

Campaign themes

In response to a candidate survey, Speers stated that the following was the largest issue confronting the school district:[9]

"I think accountability is a significant problem in the district now and will continue to be unless it is addressed. Parents need to have faith that the district is doing its best to provide the public education that they expect. Teachers need to know they will have the tools necessary to provide that education. I feel open and honest communication can bring back the accountability that the district once had."

Speers' campaign website listed the following campaign themes for 2013:[10]

  • Cultivating resolute relationships between faculty and parents is important in providing the best education for the students at Adams 12. Parents are often the first teacher in a child’s life, and conversations around the dinner table about a book they are reading in English class can lead to wonderful discussions between parents and siblings. Building strong bridges between parents and teachers will only strengthen those conversations at home.
  • The children of Adams 12 Five Star schools are not all the same. Their skin has different colors, their voices or hands speak different languages, and their brains and bodies work and learn differently. Students learn empathy when helping a classmate in Special Education during a Physical Education class. They learn about another culture when a student from Russia brings in traditional family treats during holidays. By providing the best education for every student, including those in Special Education, English Language Learners, and Gifted and Talented students, we can ensure that every student is prepared for life after their education at Adams 12.
  • It is essential that we seek out and hire the most exceptional teachers and staff at Adams 12. Retention is important in establishing a consistent education, and we must make certain that salaries and benefits are competitive with neighboring school districts in order to employ and retain the best faculty for our students.
