Mayer-Bruestle published the following on her campaign website:
“ | Being a public servant means that one puts the interests of those you lead, first. It means that you listen to those who elect you and do what is best for the whole community, not just a few with special interests. It means that you understand that to build trust, government must be accountable, transparent and fiscally responsible to the people.
School Board Members are the elected officials in our school system - school board members are the voices of the people and have one direct employee: the district Superintendent. As such, the school board should not merely be an advisory board to the superintendent - they are the publicly elected voices of the people and should take that responsibility seriously. It seems that so often, those "leaders" in government have forgotten that leadership doesn't mean that the people - taxpayers - work for them, but that they - the leaders - work for the people - ALL the people. If elected to District 833 School Board, I won't forget for whom I work - ALL the children, families, residents and business owners of 833. I will work to reinstate policies that gives the board back its power and reassert the voices of the people who elected the board. I will work toward making the district more accountable and transparent to the people by demanding that the "Budget Matrix" goes the way of the Berlin Wall (as it takes a degree in Soviet-style Central Planning to understand it) and the Line-Item Budget takes its place, so that people can once again see exactly where the 18% of the budget not being spent on salary and benefits - you know, that 18% that is SUPPOSED to be going to benefit the actual STUDENTS in the district? - is going and be real voices in the budget process. After all, considering that most of the administrators (including the superintendent) don't live in the district, so aren't actually personally affected by the decisions and policies they make for the district, the school board, as the voices of the people, is even more important. Thank you for your support.[2] |
