Collapse all
|- Clean Heat Standard: I have pledged to vote NO on the Clean Heat Standard in January. The Global Warming Solutions Act (GWSA) needs to be repealed and replaced with goals not mandates. Vermonters cannot afford to pay additional costs up to $4 a gallon on heating oil. This legislation will cost homeowners and renters thousands more per year to heat their homes if implemented. We also cannot afford the lawsuits this legislation has ushered in for mandates Vermont is already unable to meet.
- Affordability and Lower Taxes: Vermont is experiencing an affordability crisis due to double digit property tax increases in 2024 and another round of double digit increases forecast for 2025. This is on top of a new payroll tax, a 20% hike in DMV fees, and the rising cost of insurance. These increased taxes and fees, coupled with Act 250 restrictions have worsened housing costs and availability. All Vermonters are struggling to cope with the surging cost of living, especially our seniors. Accordingly, I have also pledged to sponsor legislation to exempt Social Security Benefits from state income tax. We also need balance in the legislature so that when Gov. Scott vetoes bad legislation his vetoes are not overturned.
- To improve education in Vermont, we need to prioritize funding directly for teaching and students, not the system’s overhead. Resources should focus on classrooms and student learning, not administrative costs. By simplifying the funding process and supporting local control, we can ensure that the money goes where it's needed most: to educators and the kids they teach. Reducing bureaucracy and unnecessary expenses will allow schools to focus on delivering quality education, not managing a complex system.
