It would be irresponsible for me to promise specific accomplishments because I realize this isn’t just about what I want to do as I sit here today. The priorities and needs of the LCPS students, teachers, administrators, and the taxpayers who support them are constantly changing. All that said, I do have some core initiatives that I am passionate about, to include:

-Providing our support staff with the resources they need to better identify and
immediately deal with suspected or confirmed cases of bullying in our schools. This is something I struggled with immensely when I was a student in our schools, and something that remains close to my heart. I was afraid to speak up about the abuse I received from classmates, and instead believed that ending my life would be a better way to avoid the constant bullying and attacks I faced in our schools. Unfortunately, bullying has gotten far worse these past few years with the rise of anonymous social media accounts.

-Implementing a program for smarter spending for school and classroom resources. This includes avoiding unnecessary expenses that burden taxpayers while also recognizing that sometimes you spend less in the long term if you invest a little more up front
(no more cheap, unreliable copiers that lead to long lines, maintenance costs, and teachers having to make copies somewhere outside of work).

-Expanding our the scope of the academic offerings for our students to better prepare them for their next step after graduation from our schools. This includes increasing our offerings for students who do not feel college is the right post-graduation choice--we cannot simply focus on building up our AP and Dual-Enrollment offerings when they only benefit our college bound students.
Education is definitely one of the areas I am most passionate about, which I hope is a common theme for all school board candidates! As a long-time resident of the county, I believe I have a duty to better shape the future of our community. I have first hand knowledge of how well our schools can prepare our students, as well as how essential a solid educational foundation is to the success of our area.

I am also passionate about the budget that our county faces every year. With the constant growth and the near annual opening of new schools, we must ensure we are using our tax dollars (nearly 70% of the county budget!) in areas that directly benefit our students, teachers, and communities. We need to stay away from spending money just because we have it, and instead focus on utilizing our funds to better equip our teachers and students.
One of the most important qualities that I bring to this election is the fact that I have actually been a student in our schools! I am the only candidate who has been a student in Loudoun County Schools for 12 years. I have seen both the good and the bad at all levels of our schools, and believe it is important for our county to not only focus on the positive aspects of our schools. In order to correct the issues that our teachers and students face, we must be upfront and honest about our shortcomings and realize that while our county is great, there are many areas that must be improved.
The Broad Run District will likely experience significant changes with the 2020 census- the types of changes that typically result in angst and frustration for many. The District is still growing, and with this growth, we will see many school and school boundary changes (Eagle Ridge is getting many new classrooms added very soon!). Change is inevitable and timely communication about these changes helps to set expectations. With these changes and growth, our district needs someone who will prioritize constant communication and will provide detailed and timely updates. I am already demonstrating my commitment to ongoing and unfiltered communication on my campaign Facebook page.
I would love to expand our elective offerings at our high school level. We have seen success with teachers working with individual schools to offer new, exciting electives, such as Mythology, and this is something that I would love to institute county wide. Having these electives in an online setting allows students greater flexibility to take courses that would not typically be offered at their home school, as well as filling classes that would not otherwise had been filled. Offering students electives that closely relate to their interests will allow provide them with greater incentive to take an additional course instead of registering for double early release, allowing them to leave school 2 hours early every day.
As I stated above, this is one of my top priorities. I look forward to working closely with our school counselors and administrators to help slow the fast rise of cyberbullying and bring quick resolutions to students who are victims. One area I would like to incorporate into the anti-bullying campaigns our schools push to our students is how to cope with bullying. Unfortunately, bullying has been around for decades and it will be around for generations to come. If our students are aware of proper ways to deal with the hurtful actions of their peers, we can hopefully help reduce the climbing rate of self-harm due to bullying. I also hope to be a prime example of how things will get better for our students who feel that life isn't worth living. I was ready to end my own life on many occasions, yet today am emotionally and mentally strong, have a wonderful job and friend group, and am running a campaign to better the lives of others.
