My name is Andrew Macurdy. I was born and raised in New Jersey. My mom’s family ran a highway diner. Both of my grandfathers served in World War II, one was a fighter pilot shot down in enemy-occupied territory — he survived there for nearly a year before being rescued. My dad followed in his footsteps, attending the U.S. Air Force Academy and becoming a military pilot.

New Jersey public schools helped me get to Harvard Law School — the first person in my family to become a lawyer. I served as a federal and state prosecutor in Newark and Jersey City. Then I went to the Attorney General’s Office and used what I saw in the courthouse every day to make the justice system work better for the people. I designed a public safety program from scratch pairing mental health workers with police officers to respond to emergency crisis calls as a unit, called ARRIVE Together. It’s now operating in every town in Union County, as well as dozens more across the state. My wife Ellen is also a prosecutor — but some still consider us a fun couple. We have two beautiful kids: Jack and Maeve.

I am running for the Assembly because I want to help solve problems and protect the future for my son and daughter and for families across the 21st District and New Jersey.
  • As a former federal and state prosecutor in Newark and Jersey City, I am committed to marshaling the resources of government to protect residents and improve lives.
  • As the father of two little kids, I am running for the state legislature to solve problems and protect the future for my son and daughter and families across the 21st District and New Jersey.
  • During my time as counsel to two New Jersey Attorneys General, I worked to ensure our statewide public safety policy was as effective and efficient as possible, and we need legislators who will do that throughout state government.
Transportation (particularly NJ Transit), public safety, affordability, childcare, reproductive rights, environment, gun violence prevention.
My wife, Ellen. She is smart, kind, and funny. She knows the power of a family tradition and helps me be a better father to our kids. She is a person of deep integrity and I try to follow her example every day.
We need elected officials who understand their role is to work toward solving difficult problems and improving the lives of constituents. That function is not so different from the work I have done as a counsel to two New Jersey Attorneys General in crafting statewide public safety policy. The approach generally requires understanding a problem by looking at data, learning best practices by speaking with other jurisdictions and experts, evaluating what currently exists in our state, and tailoring a solution with input from a variety of affected stakeholders.
