McMichael earned his bachelor's and master's of arts from George Mason University in 1993 and 1996, respectively, and his Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in 2000. Currently an associate professor of history and an assistant dean at Western Kentucky University, McMichael began his career as a full-time teacher in northern Virginia K-12 schools.[1]

The election in Warren County featured two seats up for general election on November 4, 2014. There was no primary election. District 3 incumbent Mike Wilson did not file for re-election. The open seat race was between challengers Amy Duvall and Andrew McMichael. District 5 incumbent Kerry Young ran against challenger Thomas Manco.
