Andrew Whalen is committee director and campaign manager for Attorney General of Missouri Chris Koster's campaign for the 2016 Democratic nomination for Governor of Missouri.[2][3] Whalen is also owner of Cardinal Strategic Consulting, a consultancy firm based in Raleigh, N.C. Prior to joining the Koster campaign, Whalen served as campaign manager for South Carolina state senator Vincent Sheheen's (D) unsuccessful 2014 campaign to unseat Republican Nikki Haley as Governor of South Carolina.[1][4]
Career
From July 2003 to November 2004, Andrew Whalen was communications director for Jon Jennings' (D) unsuccessful campaign for the United States House of Representatives from Indiana's 8th Congressional District. From March 2005 to February 2006, he served as campaign manager for David Cox (D) and John Montgomery (D) in their respective bids to the Virginia House of Delegates.[1]
Heath Shuler
From February to November 2006, Andrew Whalen was deputy campaign manager and communications director for Heath Shuler's (D) victorious campaign from North Carolina's 11th Congressional District. He was Shuler's communications director from January 2007 to June 2008, then served as campaign manager for Shuler's successful re-election bid from June to November 2008.[1] From April 2009 to October 2011, Whalen was executive director of the Democratic Party of North Carolina. In December 2010, he was named executive director of Shuler's 3rd and Long PAC, a political action committee dedicated to Shuler's 2010 re-election efforts.[5] In September 2011, Shuler—as one of the three co-chairmen of the Blue Dog Democratic caucus in the United States House of Representatives—hired Whalen as head of the Blue Dog PAC, a political action committee dedicated to helping centrist House Democrats.[6] Congressman Shuler announced his retirement from the U.S. House in February 2012.[7]
In January 2010, Whalen founded Cardinal Strategic Counseling, a consultancy firm based in Raleigh, N.C.[1] From May 2013 to December 2014, he was campaign manager for South Carolina state senator Vincent Sheheen's (D) unsuccessful 2014 campaign to unseat Republican Nikki Haley as Governor of South Carolina. Whalen serves as campaign manager and committee director for Attorney General of Missouri Chris Koster's campaign for the 2016 Democratic nomination for Governor of Missouri.[2]
In 2012, he was named to the list of Top 500 Influencers in American Politics by Campaigns & Elections Magazine.[8]
