A special primary election for Louisiana House of Representatives District 86 was called for February 17, 2018. A general election was held on March 24, 2018. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was January 5, 2018.[1]

The seat became vacant on March 1, 2018, after Chris Broadwater (R) resigned.[2]

Nicholas Muscarello Jr. (R) and David Vial (R) defeated Michael Showers (D) and Andy Anderson (R) in the special election. Muscarello defeated Vial in the runoff election.[3][4]

Louisiana elections use the majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.
