Candidate Connection

Andy Kelleher participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 16, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Andy Kelleher's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

I would fiercely advocate for rural schools, doing everything possible to ensure they receive the funding they need. I would reevaluate the way infrastructure grants are distributed so that smaller towns can be guaranteed a fair share of the funds. And I would work to develop housing and advertise local tourism in an effort to spur population growth.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Education, economic development, and infrastructure. Both of my parents are teachers, and my grandfather used to be a teacher, so schools have always been close to me. Education is vital to the future, and rural schools shouldn't be hindered simply because they have a smaller population. With economic development and infrastructure, I'm watching my home evaporate around me, and I desperately don't want to see that happen. We need to spur economic growth, and we need to renovate our aging infrastructure. If we don't, my home will die; that's why I care about it.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Andy Kelleher answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Trustworthiness; integrity; dependability; accessibility; the ability to listen well; creativity; open-mindedness; leadership; problem solving; mediating; conflict resolution[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
Trustworthiness; integrity; dependability; accessibility; the ability to listen well; creativity; open-mindedness; leadership; problem solving; mediating; conflict resolution[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Advocating for the constituents, and always voting based on their desires, even if those desires go against your own wishes. Being willing to reach across the aisle to make positive change for the people of your district. Making life at home better.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would love to reinvigorate my home and help it thrive; if I can leave behind a surging population and a booming economy, I'll be ecstatic.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
9/11; I was in Kindergarten.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Junior High Basketball Scoreboard Operator; I had it every season until the end of the season.[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Population and the changing farm economy. Farms are having to grow larger and larger to be viable, which is hurting small farms and creating ecological worries. And the population is continuing to shrink; Iowa isn't a hotbed for population growth.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Absolutely; you can get other opinions about how to do something, as well as assistance in the drafting of your own bills. You can build support with those connections as well.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Independent commission.[3]
