Expulsion from New York City Council over ethics charges
On October 5, 2020, the New York City Council voted to expel King based on several ethics charges that had been brought against him. The charges included asking a female employee to hold his hand and wear a dress to a gala, telling an employee who asked to go to the hospital for menstrual bleeding to "put a Band-Aid on it," and failing to pay a fine after pocketing government money, among others. The Council voted to remove him by a margin of 48-2 after its ethics committee found that the charges were substantiated. The expulsion was the first to occur since the revision of the City Charter in 1989, though other members left office due to criminal charges.[4]
