|Having grown up in the Fresno High area and attended Fresno Unified schools, I understand firsthand the challenges and opportunities facing our community. Education is in my blood—my father was a professor, and my mother served as a school psychologist.
With a background in supporting principals in high-poverty schools and earning a degree from Teachers College, I made the life-changing decision in 2012 to return home. My goal has always been to help build a Fresno where every child and family can thrive.
In addition to teaching at Fresno State for the past five years, I’ve spent the last two decades working with community-based organizations to tackle issues like poverty, slum housing, and gun violence in Fresno. I’m eager to continue this work and ensure our schools are places of opportunity and support for all.- In my first two years:
1. I championed Fresno Unified's implementation of Community Schools, which supports students' academic performance and well-being. Last year, five schools received the State funding for adopting this model and saw student attendance improve at double the rate of other schools. This year, the program has expanded to 19 campuses.
2. I strengthened basic support services like transportation, food, and clothing for students and families, leading to reduced absenteeism and improved academic outcomes.
3. I led an effort to expand students’ access to their College and Career Savings Accounts (CalKIDS), with over 3,000 more students claiming their accounts since March, nearly doubling enrollment. - If elected to serve another four years: I will help oversee Fresno Unified's "Every Child a Reader" initiative to ensure that all students are reading by the end of the first grade. I will ensure that a transparent and competitive process is conducted to hire the next FUSD Superintendent and will hold that person accountable as the top administrator expected to lead the district to better academic results and overall student success. I will work tirelessly to bring together everyone in Fresno Unified - students, families, teachers, staff, trustees, and the community - to elevate our school district to new heights and ensure all children will have bright futures.
- I believe Fresno Unified is on a path to dramatically improving academic results for students across the district. And I am more committed than ever to support programs and services that significantly improve academic outcomes and ensure our students graduate ready for college and careers. I would be honored to earn your support for my re-election to serve four more years on the Fresno Unified School Board.
While I was a student in Fresno Unified, I saw how the opportunities I was provided were too often denied to many of my peers. I hope my legacy will include doing everything we can to remove barriers so that every student has the opportunity to reach their highest potential.
I helped pilot a new program at Fresno High that builds on the Advance Peace model by supporting a cohort of most at-risk students. This has now led to a dedicated Case Worker on campus that continues to partner with Advance Peace in supporting most at-risk students.
