In response to a question from the Greensboro News & Record about the most pressing issue the city council will face in 2018, Nelson said:

Economic development. How much and where. What can we do as a council to facilitate and promote balanced growth in each area of the city.[3]

—Andy Nelson (2017)[1]

In response to a question about the greatest obstacle to the city's success, he said:

Identity politics, self-segregation, and cynicism/mistrust of other’s motives …. a really tough but critical problem to deal with. I don’t have that solution. I do know it starts with a positive, respectful, and honest dialogue with parties on both sides, willingness to understand the problems of all concerned, and positive leadership and example to find middle ground that works for most.[3]

—Andy Nelson (2017)[1]
